Mansfield Township police are warning the business community and residents about a series of recent incidents involving counterfeit money.
According to a release issued by township police Feb. 9, many stores in the area have been receiving counterfeit $100 bills. Police say to use caution when accepting a $100 bill.
The warning from Mansfield police comes on the heels of other recent incidents in the county involving counterfeit money. In the fall, Greenwich police arrested, within the span of a week, several New York City residents for allegedly using counterfeit $100 bills in the greater Phillipsburg area.
A pair of men from Brooklyn and Queens were arrested Sept. 29 for allegedly using counterfeit $100 bills at the Dollar Tree and Famous Footwear stores on Route 22. Arrested were Darron M. Saldana, 33, of Brooklyn, and Gary M. Middleton, 27, of Queens. A search revealed $5,000 worth of counterfeit $100 bills hidden inside the their vehicle.
On Sept. 24, three New York City residents were arrested at the Phillipsburg Mall in a separate incident involving the use of counterfeit money.
