CENTENARY COLLEGE OPENS A PEER-TO-PEER WRITING COLLABORATORY

"The goal of the Writing Collaboratory is to help people become better writers, in general, instead of helping them with writing a better paper for a specific course," says Dr. Richard Sévère, Assistant Professor of English and Director of the Writing Collaboratory. "We want people who seek our assistance to become more confident writers and address techniques that will enable them to do so."

The students who work in the Writing Collaboratory have completed a 16-week Writing Tutor Practicum course on writing center theory, teacher writing pedagogy and have been trained to work with second language learners. The students will also conduct workshops on various topics, such as resume writing and computer quick reference tips. The peer tutor position is a paid opportunity.

The Writing Collaboratory is open from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and students receive 30-minute consultation appointments with their peers. Students who utilize this service can expect to experience a collaborative environment that will not only help students become more effective writers, but will make them aware of various writing strategies, promote critical thinking and will embrace diverse perspectives.

"I was interested in this opportunity because I am studying Education and English and was intrigued by the idea of teaching my peers to become better writers and feel much more comfortable about the writing process," says Amanda Stevens. "I also feel that this experience will help me become a better teacher when I graduate."

Founded in 1867 by the Newark Conference of the United Methodist Church, Centenary College's academic program integrates a solid liberal arts foundation with a strong career orientation. This mix is designed to provide an educational experience that prepares students to succeed in the increasingly global and interdependent world.

Centenary College's main campus is located in Hackettstown, N.J., with its equestrian facility in Washington Township (Morris County). The College's School of Professional Studies Program offers accelerated degree completion programs in Parsippany, with an additional facility in Edison, and at corporate sites throughout New Jersey.

WINTER COMEDY “THE LADIES MAN” OPENS AT CSC

Charles Morey's wild, fun-filled farce The Ladies Man opens at Centenary Stage Company on February 17th at the David and Carol Lackland Center in Hackettstown.

Set in the golden age of Paris, the action of the play evolves around a charming doctor and the madness that ensues after he tells "one, tiny, little, hardly noticeable lie" to cover an innocent but embarrassing indiscretion. Soon pandemonium breaks out, and no one is left unscathed as the plot unravels and mistaken identities and unexpected connections run rampant. Adapted from Georges Feydeau's comedy "The Ladies' Dressmaker," the author once said, "Whenever two of my characters absolutely, positively under any circumstances shouldn't meet, I put them in the same room together."
"This is as close to ROTFL (Rolling on the Floor Laughing) as you will probably ever experience at a live show," raved critic Larry Murray of Berkshire Fine Arts about "The Ladies Man," and The Wall Street Journal declared "I can't recall the last time I laughed so hard." The production will be directed by CSC Artistic Director Carl Wallnau, who is known for his masterful comedic direction of numerous plays over the past two decades. Wallnau, who will also lead the cast as the doctor, is a veteran theatre professional, having performed in the first national Broadway tour of the musical "Titanic", performed many seasons with the Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival, and been seen on regional stages of the Paper Mill Playhouse, NYC's Second Stage, People's Light, The Lark Theatre, Hartford Stage, Bristol Riverside, and Orlando Shakespeare Company. Wallnau has won numerous awards over the years, including outstanding direction in productions of Springtime for Henry, Quartermaines Terms and Pygmalion.
Direct from the Broadway run of Elaine May and Mike Nichols' Relatively Speaking, Allen Lewis Rickman, returns to CSC to star as the doctor's sputtering patient, Bassinet. CSC audiences will remember Rickman from his performances in CSC's "The Prisoner of Second Avenue", "My Three Angels", "Below the Belt", and "The Small Empire Music Hall" which he co-wrote and directed. Rickman's film and television work includes the Coen Brothers' Oscar-nominated A Serious Man, Martin Scorsese's HBO series Boardwalk Empire, and Barry Levinson's Emmy-nominated You Don't Know Jack.
The Ladies Man's elegant set will be designed by Emmy Award winner Bob Phillips, who designed CSC's recent productions of Moss Hart's Light Up the Sky and Theresa Rebeck's Bad Dates. Phillips designs regularly for the Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival, The Arts Center of Coastal Carolina, Alpine Theatre Project, Florida Studio Theatre, and numerous New York and regional theatre companies. He has been the Resident Designer at the Orlando Shakespeare Festival for the past 17 years, where he has designed over 75 sets. Phillips has received Outer Critic Circle, Madison, Village and Lillian Stoates awards for his theatre work, and six Emmy awards for his television designs, including 4 for his work on Sesame Street, where he has designed for more than a decade.
The Ladies Man runs February 17th through March 4th. Performances times are Friday and Saturday nights at 8 PM, Sundays at 2PM, Thursdays (Family Nights) at 7:30 PM, with two additional matinee performances on Friday, Feb 17 (Preview) and Wed, Feb 22 at 2 PM. A student matinee is offered on Wednesday, February 29th at 10 A.M. with discounted ticket prices for school groups with advance reservations Ticket prices are $20 - $25, with discounts for seniors and students. Thursday evenings are "Family Nights" with two-for-one "rush" tickets available at the door. Tickets can be purchased online at www.centenarystageco.org, by calling (908) 979-0900, or in person at the Lackland Center at 715 Grand Ave in Hackettstown, with box office hours from 1-5 Monday through Friday, and two hours prior to performances. Performances will take place in the Sitnik Theater of the David and Carol Lackland in Hackettstown, New Jersey.
The Centenary Stage Company is a not-for-profit, professional Equity theatre, in residence at Centenary College, dedicated to serving as a cultural resource for audiences of the Skylands Region, with professional music, theatre and dance events and arts education programs throughout the year. All programs at the Centenary Stage Company are made possible in part through the visionary support of the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, the NJ State Council on the Arts, The Blanche and Irving Laurie Foundation, as well as CSC Premium sponsor Heath Village and Skylands Community Bank, and our silver sponsors, the Marriot Residence Inn and Hackettstown Regional Medical Center.

One of world's greatest drummers, Bernard "Pretty" Purdie, joins Centenary Blues line-up with Hudson River Rats

Bernard "Pretty" Purdie, considered one of the greatest - and arguably the most recorded - drummers, will bring his special brand of "sticks" to the Centenary Blues Festival when he appears with Rob Paparozzi and the Hudson River Rats on Friday March 9.

The 3rd Annual Blues Festival, presented by Joe Hirsh Productions and the Centenary Stage Company, with major support from PNC Bank, the Hackettstown Business Improvement District, Mr. Music in Washington, Marley's Gotham Grill in Hackettstown, GBW Insurance, and Good Impressions Printing and Mailing, features two full days of the blues at Centenary College and around the Hackettstown area, with the incredible Roomful of Blues headlining Saturday and Paparozzi on Friday.

The Blues Festival is a weekend-filled event for the Hackettstown area, with the David and Carol Lackland Center at Centenary College hosting music Friday and Saturday nights, preceded by "matinee shows" at Marley's Gotham Grill in the late afternoon (Rockin' Blue on Friday/Great Fraud on Saturday), and a "post-show party" on Saturday night with Brooke Shive & The 45s, also at Marley's. The Centenary shows begin at 7 on Friday and 6:30 on Saturday, with the headliners scheduled for 8:30 both nights. Other events are also being planned for the weekend including a free Downtown Kickoff Show at the Gazebo on Main Street on Thursday March 8 from 5-7 p.m. with the band Amplified Heat.

Born June 11, 1939 in Elkton, Maryland as the 11th of 15th children, Purdie began drumming as a six-year-old. By the age of 14 he had become the most important provider for his family - earning his pay with country and carnival bands. This "schooling" enabled Purdie to "feel my way into nearly every kind of music, 'cause I had to know all styles and was never afraid to try something new."

Purdie moved to New York in 1960 after finishing high school and played with Lonnie Youngblood before landing his first hit with King Curtis. This led to his work with Aretha Franklin in 1970 - and the beginning of an unparalleled career. Since then, Purdie has been a regular guest in the studios of the stars of Blues, Jazz, Soul, and Rock, working together with Paul Butterfield, Larry Coryell, Miles Davis, Hall & Oates, Al Kooper, Herbie Mann, Todd Rundgren and Cat Stevens. He has also anchored sessions with the Rolling Stones, James Brown and Tom Jones, among many others, as well as regularly producing his solo albums under his own name.
With Purdie on stage will be Paparozzi (formerly of Blood, Sweat & Tears and the Original Blues Brothers), singer & harmonica player,

Rounding out the Friday schedule will be Quimby Mountain Band opening up followed by The VooDudes, and on Saturday, Johnny Charles with Nasty Ned, and Rhett Tyler & Early Warning featuring Al Buonanno on bass and Jeff Prescott on drums.

Other key supporters for this year's festival are Courtyard by Marriott - Mt. Arlington, Residence Inn Marriott Mount Olive, Mountain Ledge Music, Investors Bank, United Jersey Blues Network, Cathy Miller Photography, CHP Communications, HTVProductions, Sound Effects Records, and MoPromo.

For ticket information and further details about the festival, go to www.centenarystageco.org or phone 908-979-0900.
